Who might be able to join this trial:

For patients with depression (MDD group):

• You have been diagnosed with a major depressive episode (either a first episode or a returning one), confirmed by two psychiatrists using a standard interview
• You are between 13 and 17 years old
• You are either not currently taking any psychiatric medication, or you have been on a stable medication dose for at least 1 week before joining
• Your depression symptoms score at least 14 points on a standard depression rating scale at the start of the study
• You have completed at least 5 years of formal schooling and can understand and complete study questionnaires
• You and your parent or legal guardian are willing to take part and sign a consent form

For healthy volunteers (comparison group):

• You are between 13 and 17 years old and are right-handed
• You have completed at least 5 years of formal schooling and can understand and complete study questionnaires
• You and your parent or legal guardian are willing to take part and sign a consent form

Who may not be able to join:

For patients with depression (MDD group):

• You have been diagnosed with any other mental health condition, apart from anxiety or sleep-related disorders
• You have a history of misusing or being dependent on substances such as alcohol, nicotine, or illegal drugs
• Your score on a standard mania (mood elevation) rating scale is 6 or higher at the start of the study
• You have recently received, or are planning to start, certain other treatments such as regular formal talking therapy, brain stimulation treatments (such as electroconvulsive therapy, magnetic brain stimulation, or others), or structured exercise therapy — either in the 6 months before or 1 month after joining (confirm with trial site)
• Your doctor considers you to be at significant risk of suicide, or your suicide-related score on the depression rating scale is 3 or higher at the start of the study
• You have a serious physical or neurological health condition, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney failure, liver problems, thyroid disorders, brain inflammation, a history of serious head injury, or epilepsy
• You have a serious eye condition such as a detached retina, optic nerve damage, or macular degeneration, or you have very high short-sightedness (strong prescription lenses)
• You are currently taking medications that make your skin or eyes sensitive to light (such as certain antipsychotics or St. John's Wort)
• The study doctors decide there is another reason that makes it unsuitable for you to take part, such as a sleep schedule that makes morning treatment impossible, or an unrecorded sensitivity to light

For healthy volunteers (comparison group):

• You currently have, or have ever had, any mental health diagnosis (such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, or anxiety disorders), or a history of substance misuse
• A close biological family member (such as a parent or sibling) has been diagnosed with a mental health condition
• You have a serious physical or neurological health condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney failure, liver problems, thyroid disorders, brain inflammation, a history of serious head injury, or epilepsy
• The study doctors decide there is another reason that makes it unsuitable for you to take part (confirm with trial site)
