• People who had problems controlling their bowel movements (fecal incontinence) before their surgery.
• People who have a neurological condition (a disorder affecting the brain, nerves, or spinal cord) that affects how their bowel works.
• People who have previously had radiation therapy to the pelvic area or bowel surgery for reasons unrelated to cancer.
• People who already have a permanent stoma (a surgically created opening on the abdomen for waste to leave the body).
