Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 18 and 75 years who are mentally alert and willing to sign a consent form.
- People who have long-lasting esophageal (food pipe) symptoms thought to be related to how the brain and gut communicate with each other — such as heartburn, acid reflux, the feeling of something stuck in the throat, difficulty swallowing, or chest pain or discomfort.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a narrowing of the food pipe, or who have had surgery on the food pipe, digestive tract, or throat.
- People who have structural problems with the food pipe (such as pouches or rings in the food pipe), or who have certain types of inflammation of the food pipe (infectious, erosive, or eosinophilic esophagitis).
- People who have been diagnosed with non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease, or significant problems with how the food pipe moves food.
- People who have had, or currently have, a cancer diagnosis affecting the food pipe, digestive tract, or any other organ.
- People who have significant hormone-related or immune/rheumatic conditions that may affect how the digestive tract moves.
- People who have been regularly taking medications that may affect food pipe movement in the past month — such as certain types of muscle-relaxing, pain-relieving, heart, or blood pressure medications (confirm with trial site).
- People who have used antidepressants, a type of medication called SSRIs, or other mental health medications in the past three months.
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People who have a mental illness or who are unable to participate cooperatively.
- People with a known allergy to tricyclic antidepressants.
- People with a known allergy to SSRIs (a type of antidepressant).
- People with a known allergy to any ingredient found in proton pump inhibitors (a type of medication commonly used for stomach acid).
