Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes and have a specific type of swelling in the centre of the retina (called diabetic macular edema) that has been treated before
- People whose most recent HbA1c blood sugar level result was 12% or below
- People whose vision in the study eye falls within a specific range — roughly between 20/32 and 20/320 on an eye chart — at the time of screening
- People whose reduced vision is mainly caused by the diabetic retinal swelling in the centre of the eye
- People whose study eye has shown a positive response to a medicine called aflibercept (given by injection into the eye)
- People who are able and willing to provide written consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- Women who are able to become pregnant
- People who have abnormal blood vessel growth in the study eye caused by something other than diabetic eye disease
- People whose study eye shows signs of damage to the optic nerve on examination
- People who have had a type of laser treatment called pan-retinal photocoagulation in the study eye
- People who have another eye condition in the study eye that may need surgery within 6 months, or any condition that could increase risk, require treatment, or interfere with study procedures or assessments
- People who have an implant in the study eye at the time of screening (artificial lenses do not count)
- People whose study eye has a condition that, in the opinion of the investigator, is likely to limit any improvement in vision
- People with a current or past history of glaucoma, steroid-related eye pressure response, or high eye pressure
- People who have had certain steroid injections into the study eye within specific timeframes before screening — including any steroid injection within 6 months, a specific product called Ozurdex within 12 months, or a product called Iluvien within 36 months
- People whose diabetic macular edema was first diagnosed 7 or more years ago
- People with a history of severe kidney disease that has required dialysis or a kidney transplant
- People who have taken part in another gene therapy study or used any experimental treatment recently, or who plan to use an experimental treatment within 6 months of joining (confirm with trial site for exact timeframes)
