Understanding Retinal Vein Occlusion and Diabetic Macular Oedema
Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and diabetic macular oedema (DME) are both conditions that affect the back of the eye, specifically a small but very important area called the macula, which is responsible for the sharp, detailed central vision you use for reading, recognising faces, and driving. In RVO, a tiny vein in the retina becomes blocked, causing fluid and blood to leak into the surrounding tissue. In DME, which is a complication of diabetes, high blood sugar levels over time damage the small blood vessels in the retina, also leading to fluid build-up in the macula. In both cases, this swelling can cause vision to become blurry or distorted, and if left untreated, may lead to permanent vision loss.

The most widely used current treatments involve injections of medication directly into the eye, known as intravitreal injections, which work to reduce swelling and, in some cases, improve vision. Laser treatment and corticosteroid implants are also used in certain situations.
