Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been recently diagnosed with a type of irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation that is not caused by a heart valve problem.
- You have never taken blood-thinning tablets (anticoagulants) before joining the trial.
- You are 18 years old or older.
- You are willing and able to sign a consent form agreeing to take part.
Who may not be able to join:
- You are already taking blood-thinning tablets (anticoagulants).
- Your irregular heartbeat is related to a faulty heart valve or a specific narrowing of a heart valve (confirm with trial site).
- Your irregular heartbeat was caused by a temporary condition that can be reversed, such as an infection, recent surgery, or a thyroid problem.
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are currently taking the contraceptive pill or other oral contraceptives.
- You have severe kidney disease where your kidneys are working very poorly (confirm with trial site).
- You have a condition affecting your connective tissues, such as lupus or similar diseases.
- You have an active cancer diagnosis that has not been treated with curative (aimed at curing) procedures within the last six months.
- You have had major surgery within the last three months.
- You have had a heart attack, stroke, mini-stroke (TIA), or a serious blood clot in a vein within the last three months.
- You have a condition that makes your blood clot more easily than normal (thrombophilia).
- You have a serious liver condition.
- You have a serious blood or bone marrow condition.
