  • You have never taken blood-thinning tablets (anticoagulants) before joining the trial.
  • You are 18 years old or older.

Who may not be able to join:

  • You are already taking blood-thinning tablets (anticoagulants).
  • Your irregular heartbeat is related to a faulty heart valve or a specific narrowing of a heart valve (confirm with trial site).
  • Your irregular heartbeat was caused by a temporary condition that can be reversed, such as an infection, recent surgery, or a thyroid problem.
  • You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You are currently taking the contraceptive pill or other oral contraceptives.
  • You have severe kidney disease where your kidneys are working very poorly (confirm with trial site).
  • You have a condition affecting your connective tissues, such as lupus or similar diseases.
  • You have an active cancer diagnosis that has not been treated with curative (aimed at curing) procedures within the last six months.
  • You have had major surgery within the last three months.
  • You have had a heart attack, stroke, mini-stroke (TIA), or a serious blood clot in a vein within the last three months.
  • You have a condition that makes your blood clot more easily than normal (thrombophilia).
  • You have a serious liver condition.
  • You have a serious blood or bone marrow condition.
