Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are currently incarcerated at RIDOC (Rhode Island Department of Corrections)
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who are awaiting trial and have not yet been sentenced
- People who speak English
- People who have an active Hepatitis C (HCV) infection, confirmed by a blood test within the past 90 days
- People who have not previously been treated for their current Hepatitis C infection
- People who do not have cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), based on a blood test result within the past 90 days
- People who report using drugs by injection
- People who are willing and able to be contacted after release from jail
- People who intend to continue taking the medication after leaving jail
- People who wish to take the medication Sofosbuvir/Velpatasvir (also called Epclusa)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have cirrhosis (significant liver scarring), based on a blood test or clinical signs within the past 90 days
- People who test positive for Hepatitis B
- People who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who have a known allergy or sensitivity to any components of the study medication
- People who have a serious illness that requires hospital admission at the time of enrolment
- People who have a documented severe and persistent mental illness on record with RIDOC
- People who have a history of serious liver complications, such as fluid build-up in the abdomen, certain types of infections, confusion caused by liver failure, kidney problems related to liver disease, or bleeding from veins in the oesophagus
- People who are HIV-positive and have had a serious HIV-related infection within the past 90 days
