Hepatitis C is a viral infection that affects the liver. It is caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV), which is passed from person to person mainly through contact with infected blood. Over time, if left untreated, the virus can cause inflammation and scarring of the liver, which may eventually lead to more serious liver problems. Many people live with hepatitis C for years without feeling noticeably unwell, which is one reason it sometimes goes undetected for a long time.
