Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who have previously had a procedure called POEM (Per-Oral Endoscopic Myotomy) to treat a swallowing condition called achalasia
- People who had a camera examination of their food pipe 3 months after POEM that showed a moderate to severe level of acid-related irritation (graded B, C, or D on a standard scale)
- People who have been experiencing acid reflux symptoms such as heartburn or bringing up stomach contents for at least 4 weeks
- People who are willing to give their consent to participate and follow the study requirements
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had surgery to treat acid reflux
- People who have a condition called Barrett's esophagus, a narrowing of the food pipe, or any cancer of the food pipe
- People who have a serious stomach-emptying problem or a food pipe movement disorder that is not related to achalasia
- People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- People with serious liver or kidney problems, as measured by specific blood test results falling outside certain ranges (confirm with trial site)
- People who regularly take certain medications including anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen), steroids, or blood-thinning medications that may affect healing of the food pipe
