Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease according to a specific set of recognised diagnostic guidelines (called the UK Brain Bank criteria), have had a full neurological and neuropsychological assessment at MUSC's movement disorder centre, and have been selected to receive a brain stimulation device (called deep brain stimulation, or DBS) implanted on one or both sides of the brain
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have vision or hearing problems that have not been corrected, based on what they report themselves
- People who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the study
- People who have a history of a neurological condition other than Parkinson's disease, including previous stroke, significant head injury, epilepsy, or seizures
- People who experience claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) or who are unable to lie flat and still inside an MRI scanner
- People who have a lung condition called COPD that requires them to use supplemental oxygen
- People who have metal implants in their body that are not safe to use with MRI scanning, such as surgical clips, staples, or heart pacemakers
