Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older at the time their diagnosis was discussed by a specialist team (called a multi-disciplinary team, or MDT)
- People diagnosed with colorectal cancer, gastric (stomach) cancer, or a non-invasive growth in the bowel or stomach — either confirmed by tissue testing or strongly suspected based on scans — where the treatment plan is curative (aimed at removing the cancer)
- People whose agreed treatment plan includes open or keyhole (laparoscopic or robot-assisted) surgery to remove part of the bowel or stomach at Royal Derby Hospital
- People who are mobile and well enough to take part in the standard enhanced recovery programme after surgery

Who may not be able to join:

- People who have a pacemaker, implantable heart defibrillator, or any other implanted nerve-stimulating device
- People who have metal implants or metalwork in either upper leg, hip, knee, or thigh bone
- People with dementia, another cognitive condition, or a language barrier that would prevent them from following instructions or operating the muscle-stimulation device used in the trial
- People who are unable to give informed consent
- People whose disability means they require a walking frame, wheeled frame, or wheelchair to move around, or who are bed-bound, as this would prevent completion of the standard post-surgery recovery programme
- People with peripheral vascular disease (poor blood circulation in the limbs)
- People with epilepsy
- People with a pre-existing diagnosis of chronic kidney disease, or whose kidney function test result falls below a certain level at the screening visit
- People with a pre-existing diagnosis of liver disease
- People who require a breathing tube (intubation) or admission to intensive care during the first five days after surgery (note: surgical high dependency unit patients would still be considered)
- People who need to return to the operating theatre for a surgical complication within the first five days after their operation
- People with a history of rhabdomyolysis (a condition involving serious muscle breakdown)
- People who are pregnant
