Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are over 18 years old
- You have a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), confirmed by a standard brain function scoring test (called the Glasgow Coma Scale) showing a very low score, measured after emergency stabilization and without the effects of sedation or muscle-relaxing medicines
- Your doctors have determined that you need a device placed to monitor pressure inside your skull and/or oxygen levels in your brain, based on established medical guidelines
- You are still in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the time of enrollment
Who may not be able to join:
- Your neurological exam suggests your brain may no longer be functioning (for example, both pupils are fixed and fully enlarged), or the exam results may not be reliable due to a high blood alcohol level or a seizure that happened less than 30 minutes before the exam
- You are pregnant (confirmed by a urine or blood test)
- Placing a brain monitoring device is not safe for you — for example, due to uncontrolled bleeding problems or a certain type of skull fracture
- A legally authorized representative (such as a family member or legal guardian) is not available to give consent on your behalf before the study procedures begin
- You are already taking part in another clinical trial (though joint enrollment with one specific other trial called BOOST3 may be allowed — confirm with trial site)
- You are currently a prisoner
