Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 18 years of age or older
- If you cannot become pregnant, you must be at least 1 year past menopause or have had a surgical procedure that prevents pregnancy; if you can become pregnant, you must agree to use two forms of contraception for the entire study
- If you are able to cause a pregnancy, you must be willing to use an acceptable form of contraception for the entire study
- You have been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and have been on a stable diabetes medication routine for at least 3 months
- Your kidneys are functioning at an adequate level, as shown by a specific blood test called eGFR being 45 or above (confirm with trial site)
- A blood test shows your bicarbonate level is at a normal or healthy level (confirm with trial site)
- A urine drug screen comes back negative
- You are able to read and sign a consent form that has been approved by an ethics review board
Who may not be able to join:
- You have had an allergic reaction to acetazolamide or similar medications, or to any ingredients in the study tablets
- You have liver disease, drink more than 14 alcoholic drinks per week, or have abnormal liver-related blood test results
- Your HbA1c blood sugar level (a 3-month average of blood sugar control) is above 10.0%
- Your hemoglobin (a measure of red blood cells) is below a certain level, indicating possible anemia (confirm with trial site)
- You take more than 4 blood pressure medications, or your blood pressure reading was too high at your screening visit
- You currently take certain types of water pills (diuretics), including loop, thiazide, or potassium-sparing diuretics
- You have a serious active heart or lung condition, ongoing chest pain, unresolved blocked arteries, or severe heart failure that requires urgent medical attention
- You live in a prison, nursing home, or have a significant mental illness that affects your ability to participate
- You are currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant during the study
- You are currently taking part in another clinical trial (observational studies are allowed)
- In the opinion of the research team, you may have difficulty following the study's medical requirements
- You are unable or unwilling to travel to the required study visits
