Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults over 18 years of age
- People who have been diagnosed with either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes
- People who initially presented with severe fluid/swelling in the central part of the retina (a specific measurement of 400 micrometres or more on eye scans)
- People who are within their first year of receiving anti-VEGF eye injections (a common treatment for diabetic eye swelling), still have some swelling remaining, but whose retinal scan measurement has reduced to below 400 micrometres at the time of joining the trial — in one or both eyes
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose macular swelling (fluid build-up at the back of the eye) is caused by something other than diabetes
- People whose retinal scan measurement is still 400 micrometres or more at the time of joining
- People who had already received anti-VEGF eye injections before they first presented with severe diabetic macular swelling (previous laser treatment to the macular area for diabetic swelling is permitted)
- People who have been treated with unlicensed anti-VEGF medications, such as bevacizumab
- People who are unable to attend the required study visits for any reason
- People with currently active proliferative diabetic retinopathy (a more advanced stage of diabetic eye disease — those whose condition has been treated and is no longer active may still be eligible, confirm with trial site)
- People taking a medication called pioglitazone who are unable to stop taking it for the duration of the trial
- People who have had cataract surgery or a specific type of retinal laser treatment (pan-retinal photocoagulation) within the past 6 weeks
- People who are currently enrolled in another clinical trial of an investigational medical product
- People who have not given their consent to participate
