Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 or older
- People who have been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (a nerve condition) using recognised medical diagnostic standards, confirmed through clinical assessment and/or fluid and nerve tests
- People showing moderate breathing difficulties, based on specific measurements of lung capacity and oxygen or carbon dioxide levels in the blood (confirm exact thresholds with trial site)
- People whose condition falls within certain ranges on three medical scales that measure weakness and breathing risk in Guillain-Barré Syndrome — Hughes Grade 3–4, EGRIS 1–3, and MRC sum score 20–40 (confirm with trial site)
- People who are sufficiently alert and conscious, have an intact ability to cough and swallow, and have stable heart and blood pressure readings
- People whose breathing problems began no more than 7 days before joining the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a long-term or ongoing lung condition such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), scarring of the lung tissue, or persistent asthma
- People who need a breathing tube inserted immediately due to severely low lung function or dangerously poor oxygen or carbon dioxide levels
- People with serious difficulty controlling their throat and swallowing muscles, or who have already had a breathing tube inserted during this illness
- People for whom the breathing support methods being studied (high-flow nasal oxygen or mask-based breathing support) would not be safe — for example, due to a facial injury, a collapsed lung that has not been treated, significant agitation, or vomiting
- People who are pregnant
- People with a serious additional health condition that significantly affects their overall outlook
- People who have not agreed to participate in the trial
