Who might be able to join this trial:
- People diagnosed with cancer of the pancreatic head, bile duct (cholangiocarcinoma), duodenum, or the ampulla (the area where the bile duct meets the small intestine) that doctors believe can be surgically removed with the goal of cure.
- People whose cancer scans show no signs that the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.
- People whose scans show that key blood vessels near the cancer (the superior mesenteric vein and portal vein) are not affected by the tumour.
- People whose scans show that the fat tissue surrounding nearby major arteries (the celiac axis, hepatic artery, and superior mesenteric artery) appears clear and unaffected.
- People who are healthy enough to undergo a keyhole (laparoscopic) surgical procedure called a pancreaticoduodenectomy.
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose general health is too poor to safely undergo surgery due to serious medical conditions.
- People whose cancer has spread to distant areas such as the lining of the abdomen, liver, distant lymph nodes, or other organs.
- People found during an initial exploratory surgery (diagnostic laparoscopy) to have a tumour that cannot be removed.
- People who would need a different type of pancreatic surgery (left, central, or total pancreatectomy) or surgery aimed only at managing symptoms rather than curing the disease.
- People who have a history of another type of cancer.
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People living with a serious mental health condition.
- People whose scans and medical team assessment indicate the cancer has grown into nearby blood vessels in a way that would require those vessels to be removed during surgery.
- People whose surgery is planned for a non-cancerous or different type of condition, such as cysts, benign tumours, or chronic calcific pancreatitis.
- People with cirrhosis (significant scarring of the liver).
- People who do not wish to participate in the study.
