Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with one of the following current conditions: social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, or major depressive disorder.
- You score low on a self-compassion questionnaire (the trial team will measure this).
- You are willing to attend all study visits and take part in the treatment as assigned.
- You are able to understand and agree to the study procedures by giving informed consent.
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a psychiatric condition other than anxiety or depression, such as a psychotic disorder, OCD, an eating disorder, bipolar disorder, a developmental or organic mental disorder, a substance use disorder in the past 6 months, or current PTSD.
- You have a serious physical health condition that may require surgery or a hospital stay.
- You have a history of a head injury that caused you to lose consciousness for a prolonged time, or you currently have problems with memory or thinking.
- You are unable to understand the study procedures or the consent process, or you have significant personality-related difficulties that may make it hard to take part (confirm with trial site).
- The trial team believes you are unlikely to follow the study procedures — for example, if you have planned travel that would cause you to miss visits.
- You are currently taking certain psychiatric medications, such as barbiturates or antipsychotics. Some sleep medications and antidepressants may be allowed if you have been on a stable dose for at least 8 weeks before the study starts and plan to stay on the same dose throughout.
- You have started a new type of talking therapy within the past month, or you are currently receiving therapy specifically aimed at treating anxiety, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
- You have completed a Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) course or a similar meditation program within the past year.
- You are currently experiencing significant thoughts of suicide or have had suicidal behavior within the past year.
- You have a medical condition (for example, epilepsy) that the study doctor or nurse thinks could be made worse by the study treatment.
- You are unable to give your own consent to take part.
- You are currently pregnant.
- You are currently a prisoner.
