Who may be able to join

  • Group A: Adults over 18 years old who have a lung nodule or lung mass and either: are being monitored with routine CT scans without needing further tests yet, or are not in a standard screening programme but have been advised to have a follow-up CT scan rather than immediate further tests — as recommended by a specialist team meeting.
  • Group B: Adults over 18 years old for whom a specialist team meeting has recommended a biopsy or surgical removal of a lung nodule or mass for diagnosis or treatment.
  • Group C – Smoking history option 1: People aged 40–75 who have smoked every day for at least 20 years and started smoking before age 15.
  • Group C – Smoking history option 2: People aged 50–75 who have been regularly exposed to other people's smoke for at least 20 years in an enclosed space such as at home or at work.
  • Group C – Smoking history option 3: People aged 50–75 who have smoked at least 10 cigarettes per day for 30 years, or 15 per day for 25 years, or the equivalent of 20 pack-years, with no period of stopping.
  • Group C – Smoking history option 4: People aged 50–75 who have smoked every day for at least 10 years and also have at least one additional lung cancer risk factor, which may include: regular exposure to second-hand smoke for more than 10 years in an enclosed space; reported workplace or environmental exposure to substances such as radon, coal smoke, soot, diesel fumes, nickel, beryllium, arsenic, cadmium, or asbestos; a parent, sibling, or child who has had lung cancer; a personal history of a tobacco-related illness such as heart or blood vessel disease, COPD, emphysema, or a cancer not already being monitored by chest scans; or weekly cannabis (joint) use for 10 years.
  • All groups: Participants must have signed a consent form agreeing to take part, must be covered by a social security scheme, and may be male or female.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • Groups A and B: People for whom a lung biopsy or chest surgery would be medically unsafe or not recommended.
  • Group C: People who already meet the national criteria set by INCa (the French National Cancer Institute) for standard lung cancer screening (confirm with trial site).
  • People who have had a cancer diagnosis within the last 5 years — though certain exceptions may apply, including some early-stage or treated cancers such as cervical carcinoma in situ, basal cell skin cancer, a specific type of treated bladder cancer, or prostate cancer with undetectable PSA levels (confirm with trial site).
  • People who are currently experiencing symptoms that may suggest lung cancer, such as unintentional weight loss of more than 10% of their usual body weight within one year, or coughing up blood.
  • People with a known history of a lung nodule that has already required specialist monitoring.
  • People with a history of pulmonary fibrosis (scarring of the lungs) or pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs).
  • People with an active lung infection.
  • People with severe heart or breathing problems that cause breathlessness at rest.
  • People with a performance status (a medical measure of general health and ability to carry out daily activities) rated at 2, 3, or 4 on the World Health Organization scale, indicating significant limitations (confirm with trial site).
  • All groups: People who are currently imprisoned or have restricted personal freedom.
  • All groups: People who are under legal guardianship or a court-appointed protection order (confirm with trial site).
  • All groups: People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • All groups: People who would be unable to complete the 30-month follow-up period required by the trial.
