Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have a biopsy-confirmed cancer of the sigmoid colon or upper rectum (at a specific early-to-moderate stage, without spread to distant parts of the body), where a surgical procedure called an anterior resection is the recommended treatment.
- People who have a pre-cancerous growth in the sigmoid colon or upper rectum that cannot be removed by endoscopy, where an anterior resection is the recommended treatment.
- People whose condition is suitable for a curative (aimed at curing) anterior resection surgery.
- People whose condition is suitable for planned (non-emergency) keyhole surgery, either laparoscopic or robotic.
- People who are mentally able to understand the study information, give informed consent, and complete questionnaires.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have an existing health condition requiring emergency surgery, such as a blocked or perforated bowel, infection inside or outside the bowel, or reduced blood supply to the intestine.
- People whose cancer has spread to distant parts of the body (Stage IV cancer).
- People who have a narrowing or blockage in the bowel or anal area below where the surgical join would be made.
- People who have previously had radiation therapy to the pelvis, including combined chemotherapy and radiation given before surgery.
- People for whom general anaesthetic is not considered safe.
- People for whom a temporary ileostomy (a bag attached to an opening in the abdomen) is planned as part of their treatment.
- People who are unable to receive bowel preparation (a cleansing process before surgery) or at least two enemas before the operation.
- People whose immune system is weakened, for example because they are taking steroid medications or receiving immunotherapy.
- People with any condition that, in the opinion of the research team, could interfere with the study — in particular, conditions that may cause significant thickening of the bowel wall, such as a history of repeated diverticulitis (confirm with trial site).
