Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 or older
  • People who still have ongoing heartburn and/or regurgitation symptoms despite taking a standard acid-reducing medication (called a PPI) for at least 8 weeks

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose heartburn or reflux symptoms come with warning signs such as difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, bleeding, vomiting, or anaemia
  • People whose GERD symptom questionnaire score is below 8 (this is a standard scoring tool used by the trial team)
  • People found to have a stomach or small intestine ulcer on a camera examination (endoscopy)
  • People with other conditions affecting the food pipe (oesophagus), such as achalasia, cancer of the oesophagus, or scarring from a corrosive injury
  • People with any cancer affecting the digestive system
  • People who have had major surgery on the digestive system in the past
  • People with a medical condition that affects how the food pipe or stomach moves, such as poorly controlled diabetes, or an overactive or underactive thyroid
  • People with reduced kidney function
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People currently taking medications that affect a specific muscle at the base of the food pipe (confirm with trial site for specific drug names)
  • People who regularly take medications that may interact with Baclofen (the study drug) — the trial site can advise on which medications are relevant
