Who may be able to join
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who are willing to give their consent to participate in the trial
- People whose general physical functioning falls within a certain range, meaning they are able to at least care for themselves even if unable to do all normal activities (confirm with trial site)
- People who have a life expectancy of at least 3 months
- People who have been diagnosed with a primary lung cancer of any stage, including non-small cell or small cell lung cancer — a confirmed tissue diagnosis is preferred but not always required
- People who are scheduled to receive a radiation treatment course of at least 40 Gy in 15 treatment sessions, or an equivalent amount (confirm with trial site for specific schedules)
- People whose radiation treatment plan shows that a sufficient portion of the esophagus (the swallowing tube) will receive a high level of radiation dose (confirm with trial site)
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People who have serious other health conditions that would make radiation treatment unsafe
- People who have used proton pump inhibitors (a type of medication commonly used for acid reflux or heartburn) in the 3 months before joining the trial
- People who have a known allergy to proton pump inhibitor medications
- People who already have painful swallowing before the trial begins
- People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- Note: having had previous radiation treatment to the chest area does not automatically prevent someone from joining, provided the combined radiation doses meet standard safety limits as determined by the treating radiation oncologist (confirm with trial site)
