Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 18 and 70 years old
- You have been confirmed by a laboratory test to have a specific type of rectal cancer (adenocarcinoma) located in the lower or middle part of the rectum, within 16 cm of the anal opening
- Your cancer has been classified as Stage II or Stage III based on scans, meaning it has grown into surrounding tissue or spread to nearby lymph nodes, but not to distant parts of the body
- You have had a CT scan of your chest, abdomen, and pelvis before treatment to assess the extent of your disease
- You are generally able to carry out day-to-day activities, with little to no limitation from your illness (confirm with trial site)
- Your blood test results meet certain minimum levels for white blood cells, platelets, haemoglobin, kidney function, and liver function (confirm with trial site for specific values)
- You are able and willing to provide written consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- You have previously had surgery to treat your rectal cancer, or you have an active inflammatory bowel condition affecting the rectum that causes abnormal connections between body parts (fistulising disease)
- Surgery or other medical treatments are not considered safe options for you for any reason
- You have previously received radiotherapy to the pelvic area
- You have been diagnosed with another cancer within the last 5 years
- You have existing health conditions that make chemotherapy or radiotherapy unsafe, such as severe nerve damage or serious heart disease
