Who may be able to join
- People aged 18 or older (any gender).
- People who have been diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer confirmed by laboratory tissue testing.
- People currently receiving a platinum- or gemcitabine-based chemotherapy treatment given in 21-day cycles, with at least 2 more cycles planned.
- People with a general health/activity level score of 0–2 on a standard scale used by doctors (called ECOG PS), meaning someone who is fully active to someone who is up and about more than half the day (confirm with trial site).
- People whose platelet count dropped below 75 × 10⁹/L during a previous cycle of the same chemotherapy treatment.
- People whose platelet count is between 100 and 200 × 10⁹/L at the time of joining the trial.
- People whose bone marrow is producing enough blood cells — specifically, a white blood cell count (ANC) of at least 1.5 × 10⁹/L and haemoglobin of at least 8 g/dL.
- People whose liver and kidney function are within acceptable ranges as measured by standard blood tests (confirm specific values with trial site).
- People whose blood clotting function is within acceptable ranges as measured by standard tests (confirm with trial site).
- People expected to live for at least 3 more months.
- Women who could become pregnant must have a negative blood pregnancy test within 7 days before the first dose, must not be breastfeeding, and must agree to use effective contraception during the trial and for 7 days after the last dose; men whose partners could become pregnant must either be surgically sterilised or agree to use effective contraception during the trial and for 7 days after the last dose, and must not donate sperm during the study.
- People who are willing to join voluntarily, sign a consent form, and agree to attend follow-up appointments as required.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People who are unable to understand what the study involves or who are unable to give informed consent.
- People who have a blood or bone marrow disorder such as leukaemia, primary immune thrombocytopenia, myeloproliferative disorders, multiple myeloma, or myelodysplastic syndrome.
- People who have had a condition causing low platelet counts — other than as a result of cancer treatment — within the 6 months before screening, including conditions such as chronic liver disease, an enlarged spleen, or infection.
- People with an active infection that is not under control.
- People whose cancer has spread into the bone marrow.
- People who have had a blood clot or related event (such as stroke, mini-stroke, heart attack, deep vein thrombosis, or pulmonary embolism) within the 6 months before screening, or who have symptoms or a history suggesting a tendency to form blood clots.
- People with serious heart conditions, including severe heart failure, a heart rhythm problem requiring medication, a heart rhythm problem known to raise the risk of blood clots (such as atrial fibrillation), or an abnormal heart electrical reading (prolonged QTc interval) within the 3 months before screening.
- People whose low platelet count is caused by something other than their cancer treatment.
- People with a known allergy to TPO (thrombopoietin, a substance that helps the body make platelets).
- People who have serious bleeding symptoms or a clear tendency to bleed, such as bleeding in the stomach, intestines, or brain.
- People currently taking other medications or supplements that may affect platelet counts (including certain traditional medicines, platelet-boosting drugs, or antiplatelet drugs).
- People whom the trial doctor judges to be unsuitable for the study for other reasons.
