Who may be able to join

  • Adults aged 18 years or older.
  • People who have weakness in the muscles that move the foot up or down, and who show at least one of the following: a stepping/high-stepping walking pattern, foot drop, muscle stiffness or spasticity, difficulty shifting weight onto the affected foot, instability while standing on the affected foot, or the knee locking back (hyperextending) as a way of compensating.
  • People whose weakness in the foot/ankle muscles is the main or a contributing cause of their walking difficulty.
  • People who are able to walk, with or without walking aids such as a cane, walker, or crutches.
  • People who have not previously used the type of foot-and-ankle brace (orthosis) being studied in this trial.
  • People who are being treated at one of the participating centres, where their care and rehabilitation schedule is compatible with the trial's visit requirements.
  • People who have freely agreed to take part in the trial.
  • People who are covered by a social security scheme.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People with cognitive (thinking or memory) difficulties that, in the investigator's judgment, could affect the reliability of the walking tests used in the study.
  • People whose condition is actively getting worse at the time of joining and could significantly affect their walking during the entire study period (for example, MS or ALS).
  • People who are medically unstable, such as those with serious heart or circulation problems, as determined by the investigating doctor.
  • People with behavioural difficulties — such as resistance to cooperation, agitation, or dementia — that the investigator believes would affect their walking assessments.
  • People who already have a carbon or NEUROSWING ankle-foot brace fitted.
  • People taller than 214 cm (approximately 7 feet).
  • People weighing more than 193 kg (approximately 425 pounds).
  • Women who are pregnant, in labour, or breastfeeding.
  • People whose freedom or decision-making is restricted by a court or administrative order, including those under guardianship, curatorship, or a justice safeguard measure.
  • People receiving psychiatric care, or those admitted to a health or social care facility for reasons other than participation in research.
  • People in an emergency situation who are unable to give their consent in advance.
