Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People whose resting blood pressure (the top number) measured at least 120 mmHg at two separate screening appointments
- People who are free from serious heart, blood vessel, or metabolic diseases, based on self-reported health history and blood test results
- People who have no medical reasons that would make a specific breathing exercise technique unsafe for them — such as recent abdominal surgery, a ruptured eardrum, severe asthma with poor symptom awareness, broken ribs, or a collapsed lung
- People who speak English and can understand study instructions and materials
- People who are willing to follow pre-visit instructions, including avoiding food and caffeine for at least 3 hours before visits, and avoiding vigorous exercise, alcohol, and non-prescribed medications for at least 24 hours before visits
- People who have not smoked cigarettes or vaped in the past year
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a personal history of heart or blood vessel disease, or conditions affecting the ears (such as a ruptured eardrum)
- People who have had recent abdominal surgery or who have an abdominal hernia
- People with asthma that involves very poor awareness of symptoms, frequent severe episodes, or an unusually low sense of breathlessness
- People with a ruptured eardrum or any other ear condition
- People with markedly elevated pressure or volume in the left side of the heart (confirm with trial site)
- People who currently have a respiratory illness such as a cold, sinus infection, or respiratory tract infection — though the trial site may be able to consider including someone once they have fully recovered
- People who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the study period
- People who are unable or unwilling to follow the pre-visit restrictions around caffeine, alcohol, and exercise
