Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 22 years of age or older
- People who have a documented or current history of atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm condition), including any type — paroxysmal (comes and goes), persistent, or long-standing persistent
- People who are scheduled to have planned mitral valve surgery (repair or replacement) that also includes a specific heart rhythm procedure called a Cox-Maze IV ablation, along with a procedure to close off a small pouch in the heart called the left atrial appendage, with or without additional tricuspid valve surgery
- People who have access to an Apple iPhone
- People who are willing and able to wear both an Apple Watch and a Zio Patch (a small heart monitoring sticker) at set times throughout the study
- People who are willing and able to attend follow-up visits and complete surveys over the longer term of the study
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a cardiac pacemaker
- People who have heart failure where the heart's pumping strength is significantly reduced (ejection fraction below 40%)
- People who are also having aortic valve replacement or coronary artery bypass graft surgery at the same time
- People with a personal or family history of skin allergies to adhesives or hydrogels (sticky materials used in patches or medical devices)
- People who have tattoos on the wrist or forearm where the Apple Watch would need to be worn
- People who are pregnant
