Who might be able to join this trial:

For young people and their parents:

  • Students aged 12 to 17 who attend a partnering rural middle school or high school
  • Young people who are able to read, write, and speak English well enough to take part in the program activities
  • Parents or guardians who are able to read, write, and speak either English or Spanish well enough to take part in the research activities

For mentors and mentor supervisors:

  • People aged 18 or older
  • People who have already gone through the standard screening and selection process at a partnering mentoring organisation, including a background check
  • People who are available to help run the program during after-school hours

Who may not be able to join:

For young people and their parents:

  • Young people who are experiencing moderate or severe depression, based on a standard questionnaire score (confirm with trial site)
  • Young people who are currently having thoughts of suicide with a plan or intention to act, and who need a higher level of professional care
  • Young people who do not have enough English ability to take part in the program activities
  • Parents or guardians who are not able to read, write, or speak English or Spanish well enough to take part in the research activities
