Who might be able to join this trial:

For the main participants (called "probands") — Step 1:

• Adults aged 18 or older who have been newly diagnosed with primary colorectal cancer (colon or rectal cancer) within the last 3 months, at any stage from Stage I to Stage IV
• People whose cancer has been confirmed by laboratory testing as a colon or rectal adenocarcinoma, including cases where the tumor involves nearby areas such as the small bowel
• People with more than one primary colon cancer diagnosis at the same time
• People who have had other cancers in the past, including non-invasive cancers, or who currently have a second cancer alongside their colorectal cancer
• People who have not had germline (inherited gene) testing in the past 2 years and do not already have a known hereditary colon cancer syndrome
• People who have at least 2 living close family members (parents, siblings, or children) who also meet the trial's eligibility requirements, and who are willing to share their cancer diagnosis with those family members
• People who can speak and read English or Spanish, as this is required to complete study materials and receive genetic education
• People who do not have a known diagnosis of dementia, cognitive impairment, or a psychiatric or developmental condition that significantly affects their ability to understand information and make decisions — eligibility on this point is determined by the treating doctor

For the main participants — Step 2:

• Probands who have tested positive for a harmful inherited gene change (called a pathogenic germline variant) in a cancer-related gene

For close family members (called "FDRs" — first-degree relatives):

• Adults aged 18 or older who are a parent, sibling, or child of the main participant
• People who have not previously had germline (inherited gene) testing and do not already have a known hereditary colon cancer syndrome
• People who live within the United States, as the genetic testing used in this trial is only available to US residents
• People who can speak and read English or Spanish, as this is required to complete study materials

Who may not be able to join:

• People diagnosed with Stage 0 or in-situ colorectal cancer (the earliest form, where cancer cells have not spread beyond the original tissue layer)
• People who have already had germline genetic testing within the past 2 years, or who already have a known hereditary colon cancer syndrome
• People who do not have at least 2 living close family members who also meet the trial's eligibility requirements, or who are unwilling to share their diagnosis with those family members
• People who are unable to speak or read English or Spanish
• People with a known diagnosis of dementia, cognitive impairment, or a psychiatric or developmental condition that significantly affects judgment and reasoning — the treating doctor makes this determination
• Family members who live outside the United States
