Who might be able to join this trial:
For the N-Sleeve Gastrectomy or Gastric Bypass groups:
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who are willing and able to provide written consent to participate
- People whose body weight meets national guidelines for weight-loss surgery — specifically, a BMI of 40 or above, or a BMI of 35 or above alongside other health conditions related to obesity
- People who have ongoing acid reflux symptoms, shown by at least one of the following: regular use of acid-blocking medication (called PPIs), a reflux symptom questionnaire score above 6 (GerdQ), or a camera examination of the food pipe showing signs of irritation rated Grade B or higher
For the Sleeve Gastrectomy observation group:
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who are willing and able to provide written consent to participate
- People whose body weight meets national guidelines for weight-loss surgery — specifically, a BMI of 40 or above, or a BMI of 35 or above alongside other health conditions related to obesity
- People who have no symptoms and no history of acid reflux disease
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had surgery to treat acid reflux
- People who have had any prior surgery on the upper part of the digestive tract (stomach, oesophagus, or nearby areas)
- People who currently smoke or have a history of nicotine use
- People with serious heart failure classified as severe by medical standards (confirm with trial site)
- People who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the study period
- People whose overall health situation, in the opinion of the medical team running the trial, could make it difficult to safely follow the study's requirements
