Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who have been diagnosed with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat that comes and goes) and have had at least one episode lasting 30 seconds or more, confirmed by a heart monitor test
- People who are willing and able to sign a written consent form agreeing to take part
- People who are expected to live for more than one year
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose irregular heartbeat has lasted continuously for more than 7 days, or has been ongoing for more than one year
- People whose irregular heartbeat is caused by something other than the heart itself, such as a thyroid problem, electrolyte imbalance, or alcohol use
- People whose left heart chamber (left atrium) is measured as too large on an ultrasound of the heart (45mm or more across)
- People who have other significant heart rhythm problems in addition to atrial fibrillation
- People who have significant heart valve disease or an artificial heart valve
- People with severe heart failure (confirm with trial site for exact classification)
- People who have previously had a procedure to treat atrial fibrillation or a related heart rhythm problem using ablation (a procedure that uses energy to correct heart rhythm)
- People who have previously had a procedure to close a hole in the heart or seal off part of the heart
- People who have a non-cancerous tumour in the heart called an atrial myxoma
- People who have a pacemaker or implanted defibrillator device
- People with a history of pericarditis (inflammation around the heart)
- People who were born with a structural heart condition
- People who have blood clotting disorders or bleeding disorders
- People who cannot safely take blood-thinning medications
- People who cannot have a CT scan or MRI scan
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People with a Body Mass Index (a measure of body weight relative to height) above 30
- People who have had an organ transplant in the past
- People with serious lung disease
- People whose kidneys are not working well enough (confirmed by a specific kidney function measurement falling below a set level — confirm with trial site)
- People who currently have an active cancer
- People who currently have a significant infection
- People who are not expected to live for more than one year
- People who have a psychiatric condition that would prevent them from taking part in the study
- People who are unwilling or unable to provide informed consent
