Who may be able to join
- Adults aged 18 to 75 years, of any sex.
- People with a confirmed diagnosis of stage III or IV non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer (a specific type of lung cancer) that cannot be surgically removed, as determined by a specialist team.
- People whose lung cancer has a specific genetic change — either an "exon 19 deletion" or an "L858R mutation" — in a gene called EGFR, confirmed by an approved test.
- People who have not previously received any systemic treatment (such as chemotherapy or targeted therapy) for their lung cancer.
- People with a good general level of physical functioning, rated 0 or 1 on a standard medical scale (meaning largely active and able to carry out daily activities with little or no restriction).
- People with an estimated life expectancy of at least 6 months.
- People whose primary lung tumour measures at least 1 cm, and who have at least one measurable area of disease remaining after any surgery, as assessed using standard imaging criteria.
- People with adequate blood cell counts — specifically, a sufficient level of infection-fighting cells, platelets, and red blood cells, as measured by blood tests.
- People with adequate liver function, based on blood test results within accepted ranges (with slightly different allowances if liver metastases are present).
- People with adequate kidney function, based on blood test results within accepted ranges.
- People with adequate lung function, meeting at least one of the following: a breathing test result (FEV1) of at least 1.2 litres or at least 40% of the expected value; a specific ratio of breathing measurements (FEV1/FVC) of at least 0.7; or a lung gas transfer test result of at least 40% of the expected value. If breathing test results fall below certain thresholds, additional exercise-based tests may be recommended to assess lung reserve (confirm with trial site).
- People who have been assessed by the study team and considered suitable for surgery to remove the primary tumour.
- People who have provided written consent to participate and are willing to follow the study requirements.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People whose lung cancer has other known EGFR genetic changes beyond the specific ones required for this trial.
- People whose lung cancer tissue shows signs of a mixed type involving small-cell lung cancer, or who have a history of their cancer changing into small-cell lung cancer.
- People with a history of a primary immune system disorder, or who have previously received a transplant of an organ or bone marrow from another person.
- People with active, currently spreading cancer in the brain. People with previously treated brain metastases may still be considered if their condition has been neurologically stable for at least 2 weeks before joining, and they are either not taking steroid medications or are on a stable or reducing low dose (confirm with trial site).
- People who are pregnant.
- People with a serious ongoing health condition — including uncontrolled systemic illness, psychiatric illness, active or uncontrolled infection, or significant abnormal test results — that the study team believes could interfere with participation or the interpretation of results.
