Who may be able to join

  • Adults between the ages of 18 and 85.
  • People who have been diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) — either Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's Disease — confirmed in their medical records.
  • People who are receiving ongoing IBD care as outpatients at Victoria Hospital or St. Joseph's Hospital, with at least one follow-up appointment scheduled within the next 2 years.
  • People who are able to read, understand, and independently sign a consent form agreeing to take part in the trial.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People who do not meet the criteria listed above.
  • People who have also been diagnosed with another condition that may affect how the body processes calcium or Vitamin D — such as rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammatory joint conditions, thyroid disease, parathyroid disease, a primary bone disease, granulomatous disease, sarcoidosis, or lymphoma.
  • People who have reduced kidney function (based on a specific blood test result), are currently receiving dialysis, have chronic liver disease, or have higher-than-normal calcium levels in their blood.
  • People who are taking steroid tablets (oral corticosteroids) to manage any condition other than IBD.
  • People who have taken Vitamin D or calcium supplements at any point in the 6 months before the trial.
  • People who have only ever had a single appointment with the gastroenterology team and have not had any ongoing follow-up care.
