Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are pregnant and at 36 weeks or more along in their pregnancy, with no major problems detected with the baby
  • People who are 18 years of age or older
  • People who are admitted for labour at Dhulikhel Hospital, or who plan to give birth at Dhulikhel Hospital
  • People who are considered at increased risk of developing preeclampsia (a serious blood pressure condition in pregnancy), based on having at least ONE of these higher-risk factors: a previous pregnancy with preeclampsia, Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, carrying more than one baby, kidney disease, or an autoimmune disease
  • Alternatively, people considered at increased risk based on having TWO or more of these moderate-risk factors: first-time pregnancy, BMI over 30, a close female relative (mother or sister) who had preeclampsia, African American background, low socioeconomic status, age over 35, a history of a previous baby being smaller than expected, a previous pregnancy that did not go well, or a gap of more than 10 years between pregnancies

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have already been diagnosed with a high blood pressure condition related to pregnancy — including gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, eclampsia, or a condition called HELLP syndrome
  • People who have chronic (long-term) high blood pressure that existed before or separately from the pregnancy
  • People with a known allergy or medical reason not to take a medication called nifedipine
  • People who are unable or unwilling to give their formal agreement to participate in the trial
  • People whose blood pressure readings are already high (two or more readings at certain elevated levels) after agreeing to participate but before a specific blood test is done (confirm with trial site)
