Who might be able to join this trial:
For the mindfulness-based part of the trial:
- People who can read and write, or who have completed more than a basic level of schooling.
- People who have normal vision and hearing, or who use glasses or hearing aids that fully correct these, and who are able to communicate and understand instructions.
- People who are right-handed, as confirmed by a standard handedness checklist called the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory.

- People who have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder by a psychiatrist, using standard diagnostic guidelines, and who are able to follow outpatient clinic rules and routines.

- People who have normal vision and hearing, or who use glasses or hearing aids that fully correct these, and who are able to communicate and understand instructions.
- People who are right-handed, as confirmed by a standard handedness checklist called the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory.
- People for whom a clinical doctor has prescribed brain stimulation therapy.
Who may not be able to join:
For both parts of the trial:
- People who have dementia, have had a stroke, have blood vessel disease affecting the brain, a brain injury, epilepsy, or Parkinson's disease.
- People who have any other disorder affecting the nervous system (confirm with trial site).
- People who are dependent on alcohol or drugs.
- People who have other serious physical health conditions, such as diabetes, heart failure, or hormone/gland disorders, or who have had a heart attack in the past three months.
- People who have metal objects inside their body that would prevent them from having an MRI scan — for example, a heart pacemaker, vascular clips, hearing implants, artificial joints, or metal pins.
- People who have claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces), which could make MRI scanning difficult.
- People who are pregnant or who may possibly be pregnant.
