Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been clinically diagnosed with CMT (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease) and have had this confirmed through genetic testing
- People between the ages of 12 and 75
- People who are able to walk at a slow to moderate pace without wearing an AFO (a type of brace that supports the ankle and foot)
- People who can read and write in English and are able to sign a written consent form
- People joining the non-surgical group must have been prescribed an AFO brace by a doctor for use in daily activities
- People joining the surgical group must have already had an operation to correct a CMT-related foot deformity, specifically one focused on balancing the muscles and correcting the back part of the foot
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have other conditions or risk factors that can cause nerve damage, such as diabetes or heavy alcohol use
- People with vision problems that have not been corrected
- People who have a history of a muscle or bone injury that required surgery
- People who have lost the ability to feel protective sensations in the sole of their foot
- People who experience pain greater than 4 out of 10 while walking, or whose pain increases by more than 2 out of 10 during testing
- People where the examiner has concerns that the individual may not be able to complete the study
- People joining the non-surgical group who have previously had surgical correction of a CMT-related foot deformity focused on muscle balancing and hindfoot correction
