Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who have been diagnosed with rectal cancer (a specific type called adenocarcinoma), confirmed through a tissue sample, where the tumor is located within 12 cm of the opening of the back passage
- People whose cancer is at stage II or stage III, meaning the tumor may have grown into surrounding tissue and/or nearby lymph nodes, but has not spread to distant parts of the body
- People whose cancer scan (MRI) shows that the edges around the tumor appear clear, meaning the cancer does not appear to have reached the outer margin of the area being assessed
- People whose overall physical health falls within a standard pre-surgery fitness range (confirm with trial site)
- People who have read and signed a consent form agreeing to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose MRI scan shows the tumor has grown beyond the layer of tissue surrounding the rectum
- People whose cancer has spread to other parts of the body (stage IV/metastatic disease)
- People who have had rectal cancer that has come back after previous treatment
- People who have another active cancer at the same time
- People who need emergency surgery
- People for whom surgery under general anaesthetic is not considered safe or suitable
