- People aged 85 or younger, of any gender
- People who have been diagnosed with rectal cancer where the tumour is located in the middle or lower part of the rectum (within 10 cm of the anal opening) and where a specific surgical joining technique using a circular stapling device is planned
- People who have already received treatment before surgery (such as chemotherapy or radiation) and are now having surgery, including those who previously had a stent placed to relieve a bowel blockage

- People (or their authorised representative) who are willing to sign a consent form and are able to attend follow-up appointments during the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose health means they cannot safely undergo routine surgery, based on pre-operative assessments
- People who are currently taking part in another clinical trial
- People whose religious or cultural beliefs do not permit contact with products derived from pigs — the device used in this trial contains material sourced from pigs, and out of respect for such beliefs (for example, Islamic beliefs), participation is not recommended in those cases, though the final decision is left to the individual after full discussion with the trial team
- People whose cancer type or stage means they should receive other treatments first according to established guidelines — for example, people whose cancer warrants chemotherapy or radiation before surgery, or people whose tumour has a specific genetic marker (MSI-H/dMMR) that means immunotherapy should be tried first
- People who require a more extensive type of lymph node removal surgery, or who are planned for a specific surgical approach called TaTME (confirm with trial site for details)
- People who, due to language barriers, intellectual disability, or other conditions, are unable to understand the trial information or complete follow-up visits, or whom the research team considers unsuitable for other medical reasons (such as uncontrolled serious illness or mental health conditions)
