Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People between 10 and 20 years of age
  • People who have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder (a condition involving persistent low mood) or bipolar disorder (a condition involving extreme mood swings), confirmed using a standard diagnostic interview
  • People who are currently experiencing a moderate to severe episode of depression, measured by a specific rating scale score of 17 or higher
  • People (and, for those under 18, one or two parents or guardians) who have given their informed consent after receiving a full explanation of the study

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have received certain brain stimulation treatments (such as rTMS, tDCS, or electroconvulsive therapy) or standard psychological therapy within the 6 months before screening
  • People who have been diagnosed with any other mental health condition or personality disorder alongside their main diagnosis
  • People who are assessed by a clinician as being at serious risk of suicide
  • People who have diabetes, high blood pressure, blood vessel disease, infectious diseases, or other significant physical health conditions
  • People with unstable physical health conditions (for example, severe asthma) or neurological conditions such as a past head injury with loss of consciousness for 5 minutes or more, stroke-related conditions, brain tumours, or degenerative brain diseases
  • People with an intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorder
  • People for whom an MRI scan would not be safe or possible — for example, due to severe claustrophobia, a pacemaker, or metal implants in the body
  • People who are currently misusing or dependent on drugs or alcohol
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
