- People whose immune system is suppressed or weakened.
- People who have a thyroid condition affecting how the thyroid gland works.
- People who have a neurological condition that affects their ability to feel or report pain accurately.
- People requiring emergency surgery, or where the planned keyhole surgery changes to open chest surgery during the procedure.
- People whose planned surgery is expected to last less than one hour, or who require a heart-lung bypass machine during surgery.
- People in whom the nerve-blocking technique does not work effectively enough, as determined by a check of sensation in the chest area at four hours after the operation (confirm with trial site).
