Who may be able to join

  • People who have been assessed as a low-to-moderate anaesthesia risk, falling into category I, II, or III on a standard scale used by anaesthesiologists.
  • People with a body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) between 18.5 and 30 kg/m².
  • People who are scheduled to have a minimally invasive keyhole chest operation (called VATS) to remove a lung or chest cavity tumour, where the surgery is expected to last at least one hour.
  • People whose surgical plan includes general anaesthesia combined with two specific nerve-blocking techniques to manage pain in the chest area.
  • People who have given written agreement to participate in the trial.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People who have been assessed as category IV or higher on the anaesthesiologist risk scale, meaning they have a severe medical condition.
  • People who have a fever (temperature above 37.5°C) or abnormally low body temperature (below 36.0°C) before surgery.
  • People who have experienced ongoing pain or have been using opioid pain medications for three months or longer.
  • People whose immune system is suppressed or weakened.
  • People who have a thyroid condition affecting how the thyroid gland works.
  • People who have a neurological condition that affects their ability to feel or report pain accurately.
  • People requiring emergency surgery, or where the planned keyhole surgery changes to open chest surgery during the procedure.
  • People whose planned surgery is expected to last less than one hour, or who require a heart-lung bypass machine during surgery.
  • People in whom the nerve-blocking technique does not work effectively enough, as determined by a check of sensation in the chest area at four hours after the operation (confirm with trial site).
