Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People between 18 and 85 years of age.
  • People who have been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia (a condition where part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm into the chest), including any type from mild to severe.
  • People whose acid reflux (heartburn) symptoms have not improved after taking 40 mg of omeprazole (a common stomach acid medication) every day for 8 to 12 weeks.
  • People whose acid reflux has been confirmed by either a special test that measures acid levels in the food pipe over 24 hours, or by a camera examination showing inflammation in the food pipe, or both.
  • People whose hiatal hernia has been confirmed by both a CT scan of the abdomen and a camera examination of the stomach.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have acid reflux but do not have a hiatal hernia.
  • People who have a condition affecting the movement or muscle function of the food pipe (confirm with trial site).
  • People who have previously had surgery on the food pipe or in the upper abdomen.
