Who may be able to join
- People of any gender who have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease (confirmed using clinical, imaging, and tissue examination results in line with current guidelines), where the disease causes narrowing in the bowel (a specific pattern called B2 under a standard classification system), located in the right side of the large bowel or the area where the small and large bowel meet, and who are already being seen at the Inflammatory Bowel Disease clinic of the relevant Gastroenterology unit.
- People who are also scheduled to have a colonoscopy with tissue samples taken for a clinical reason, such as checking on their disease, a flare-up, or routine follow-up.
- People aged 18 to 85 years old.
- People who are either not taking any specific treatment for Crohn's disease, or who are taking mesalazine or sulfasalazine only.
- People who have been fully informed about the study, understood what is involved, and have voluntarily signed a consent form.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People who have another acute or long-term inflammatory bowel condition, such as diverticulitis, an infection-related bowel inflammation, or ulcerative colitis.
- People who are being treated for Crohn's disease with immunosuppressive medications (such as thiopurines, methotrexate, or cyclosporine), biologic therapies (such as anti-TNFα agents, vedolizumab, or ustekinumab), JAK inhibitor tablets, or steroid medications taken by mouth or through a drip.
- People who have an immune system or rheumatological condition.
- People who have had, or currently have, any form of cancer.
- People who currently have an active infection.
- People who have had an organ transplant at any point.
- People currently taking medications known to significantly affect a specific cell process called autophagy (confirm with trial site).
