  • Adults aged 18 years or older.
  • People who have been diagnosed (using the ICD-10 system) with one of the following: recurrent depression, severe depression, schizoaffective disorder (during a depressive episode), or bipolar disorder (during a depressive episode).
  • People for whom a doctor has determined that ongoing maintenance treatment is appropriate after responding well to a recent acute treatment — such as esketamine, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), or electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) — with symptoms having improved or gone into remission.
  • People who are able to give informed consent, as confirmed through a discussion with a doctor.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who are currently in the acute (active crisis) phase of a mood disorder and have not responded to previous treatments.
  • People who currently have a clinically significant personality disorder (confirm with trial site).

  • People who have a medical reason that prevents them from receiving tDCS (a type of mild brain stimulation) — for example, a skin condition at the area where the electrodes would be placed, or a cochlear implant.
  • People who have neurological, physical, or psychiatric conditions that could affect the safety of the trial or the reliability of its results.
