Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 22 years of age or older at the time of screening
- You are scheduled for a specific type of large bowel (colon) removal surgery, and your doctors have confirmed you are healthy enough to have it
- You are able to read, understand, and sign a consent form for the study
- Your overall health and fitness for anesthesia has been assessed as acceptable (below the highest-risk category)
- If you have had cancer, you finished chemotherapy at least 2 months before the procedure
- You live within 150 miles of the study center and plan to stay in that area for the whole study
- You are able to avoid smoking for the entire follow-up period of the study
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a known or suspected allergy to silicone, nickel, titanium, or a metal called Nitinol
- Your body mass index (a measure of weight relative to height) is above 55
- Your diabetes is poorly controlled (confirmed with a specific blood test result)
- You have a birth defect or other condition affecting your digestive tract that could block a small medical device from passing through
- You have been recently diagnosed with a blocked or burst (perforated) colon cancer
- There are medical reasons why you cannot safely have a camera procedure (endoscopy) or keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery, or you have had a failed camera procedure in the past that suggests it would be difficult again
- You have a history of repeated small bowel blockages
- You have a blood clotting problem that cannot be managed with medication, or your platelet count (cells that help blood clot) is too low
- You have moderate to severe kidney disease or are currently on dialysis
- You have abnormally high potassium levels in your blood, a tendency for blood to clot too easily, or a history of blood clots in your veins or lungs
- Your immune system is weakened — for example, due to active cancer treatment, a blood cancer, HIV, or taking medicines that suppress the immune system (confirm with trial site)
- You have significant heart failure or a serious irregular heart rhythm (confirm with trial site)
- You have severe, uncontrolled chronic lung disease
- You have an active infection at or near the surgical area, or the wound is classified as heavily contaminated or infected
- You have a medical reason that means you cannot safely receive general anesthesia
- You are currently breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning to become pregnant during the study follow-up period
- You are currently taking part in, or have taken part in, another clinical trial involving an experimental drug, device, or treatment within the last 30 days
- The lead doctor running the trial does not consider you a suitable candidate for the study for medical reasons
