Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You are scheduled to have a planned heart bypass surgery (where surgeons use blood vessels to reroute blood around blocked arteries in the heart)
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a history of an irregular heart rhythm condition called atrial fibrillation
- Your bypass surgery is planned to be performed while your heart is still beating (known as "off-pump" surgery)
- You are currently taking a medication called colchicine for any reason
- You have had a bad reaction to colchicine in the past, such as a rash, hives, itching, or blistering or peeling skin, with or without fever
- Your heart surgery is needed urgently or in an emergency situation
- You need or have needed a special life-support machine called ECMO (a machine that temporarily does the work of the heart and lungs) before or after surgery
- You have had a heart transplant
- You currently use a mechanical device to help your heart pump blood (called an LVAD)
- Your kidneys are not working well enough, based on a specific blood test result (confirm with trial site)
- You have raised levels of a muscle-related protein in your blood before surgery, or you have a known muscle disease (confirm with trial site)
- You have severe liver disease or abnormal liver blood test results above a certain level (confirm with trial site)
- You have a long-term bowel or intestinal condition, or a blood disorder (confirm with trial site)
- You are not able to speak English
- You are pregnant or currently breastfeeding (applies to women)
