Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 years or older, of any sex
- People who have been diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes
- People whose vision in the affected eye is at least 20/400 (with the best possible glasses or contact lens correction)
- People who have diabetic macular edema (swelling in the central part of the retina) of a specific size — the trial site will measure this using a specialised eye scan called OCT, with the swelling falling within a defined range
- People who have diabetic changes to the retina at any stage that is non-proliferative (early-to-moderate), or who have more advanced retinal disease that has been treated with a full course of laser therapy and shows no signs of current active disease on a specialised eye imaging test
Who may not be able to join:
- People who only have functional vision in one eye
- People who have chronic kidney failure or have had a kidney transplant due to diabetes-related kidney disease
- People whose blood sugar control measure (HbA1c) is above 10%, indicating poorly controlled blood sugar levels
- People who have a condition where the gel inside the eye is pulling on the central retina (vitreomacular traction syndrome)
- People who have scar tissue growing on the surface of the retina (epiretinal membrane)
- People who have had laser treatment to the retina (PRP) within the four months before the trial treatment
- People who have had any eye surgery — including cataract surgery or surgery inside the eye — within the six months before the trial
- People who have abnormal new blood vessels growing on the iris (the coloured part of the eye)
- People who have severe glaucoma (a serious pressure-related eye condition)
- People who have high-risk advanced diabetic retinal disease
- People whose pupils do not dilate (widen) adequately for examination
- People who have an enlarged avascular zone in the central retina (an area without normal blood vessels), as detected on eye imaging (confirm with trial site)
- People who have any condition that could affect the accuracy of eye scan measurements or vision testing
