Who might be able to join this trial:
Intervention Group (active treatment):
- People who have been diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (a specific type of Parkinson's with no known cause)
- People who are able to understand, agree to, and complete all planned study procedures
- People whose Parkinson's symptoms, while on their regular medication, fall within stage 1 or 2 on a standard disease severity scale called Hoehn & Yahr (meaning relatively mild symptoms)
- People who score above 22 on a standard memory and thinking test called the Mini Mental-State Examination
Control Group with Parkinson's Disease:
- People who have been diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease
- People who are able to understand, agree to, and complete all planned study procedures
- People whose Parkinson's symptoms, while on their regular medication, fall within stage 1 or 2 on the Hoehn & Yahr scale
- People who score above 22 on the Mini Mental-State Examination
Healthy Reference Group:
- People who are able to understand, agree to, and complete all planned study procedures
Who may not be able to join:
Intervention Group (active treatment):
- People who have cancer in the brain, neck, or head area
- People who have active medical implants (such as a pacemaker) inside their body
- People who have epilepsy
- People with alcoholism
- People with a history of substance abuse
- People who have an open wound on their scalp
- People with severe psychiatric or psychological disorders
- People who are pregnant
- People whose Parkinson's medication has been changed in the six weeks before the treatment is due to start
- People currently taking certain blood-thinning medications, including Marevan, Marcoumar, Pradaxa, Eliquis, Xarelto, Lixiana, Novostan, Fragmin, or Innohep
- People who have a neurological condition other than Parkinson's disease
- People who have previously had a stroke
- People whose movement or motor difficulties are caused by something other than Parkinson's disease
Control Group with Parkinson's Disease:
- People who have a neurological condition other than Parkinson's disease
- People whose movement or motor difficulties are caused by something other than Parkinson's disease
Healthy Reference Group:
- People who have any neurological condition
- People who have reduced movement or motor difficulties caused by any condition
