Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who have had a spontaneous brain bleed (not caused by injury) between 14 days and 12 months before joining the trial
- People for whom brain scan images from their brain bleed are available for the trial team to review
- People whose heart tracing (ECG) shows an irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation
- People with a stroke risk score (called CHA₂DS₂-VA) of 2 or higher, as calculated by a doctor
- People who are willing to be randomly assigned to a treatment group and able to attend follow-up appointments as required by the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose atrial fibrillation is caused by a clearly reversible condition, such as an overactive thyroid or low potassium levels
- People who are fully dependent on others for care and have very little functional ability (as measured by a standard disability scale)
- People with blood pressure that is not well controlled (specifically, a top reading above 160 mmHg)
- People who have active, uncontrolled bleeding
- People who currently have an active infection being treated with antibiotics
- People with end-stage kidney failure or who are receiving dialysis
- People with liver failure
- People with untreated blockages in the heart's arteries that a doctor has recommended need a procedure to restore blood flow
- People found to have abnormal masses or blood clots inside the heart, as detected by a heart ultrasound
- People with a life expectancy of less than one year, for example due to advanced cancer
- People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant
- People with psychological or psychiatric conditions that would prevent understanding the study or cooperating with its requirements
- People who the trial investigators consider unsuitable for any other reason (confirm with trial site)
