Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 30 and 50 years old
- Both men and women are eligible
- People who have nerve pain on one side of the lower back that travels down the leg (a condition called lumbar radiculopathy)
- People whose MRI scan shows a small disc bulge in the lower back, positioned toward the back and side (posterolateral mild disc herniation)
- People who test positive on the straight leg raise test, where pain occurs when the leg is lifted between 30 and 70 degrees
- People who test positive on the crossed straight leg raise test, where lifting one leg causes pain on the opposite side
- People who test positive on the slump test, a seated nerve tension test
- People whose pain and symptoms follow a specific nerve pathway pattern in the lower back area known as the L4 and L5 nerve levels
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose MRI scan shows spinal instability, significant narrowing of the nerve openings in the spine, or structural problems that a doctor determines require surgery (such as a large disc bulge)
- People who have severe weakness in the muscles of the leg, as measured by a standard muscle strength test (graded 0, 1, or 2 out of 5)
- People who show signs of a serious nerve condition affecting the lower spine, such as numbness in the groin or inner thigh area, or loss of bladder or bowel control
- People who have been diagnosed with a slipped vertebra in the lower back (spondylolisthesis)
- People who have a fracture in the lower spine
- People who have been diagnosed with spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
- People who have a tumour affecting the spine
- People who have been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis (a type of inflammatory arthritis affecting the spine)
- People who have had previous surgery on their spine
- People who are pregnant
