Who might be able to join this trial:

• People aged 18 to 60 years old, of any gender.
• People who have been assessed by a doctor and meet the standard medical definition of mild-to-moderate depression or anxiety symptoms, as defined by a widely used diagnostic guide called the DSM-5.
• People whose depression or anxiety scores reach a certain level on standardised rating scales used by clinicians at the screening appointment.
• People who have not used anti-anxiety or antidepressant medications (including certain traditional Chinese medicines) in the two weeks before the first dose, except for a medication called Escitalopram Oxalate.
• People who are capable of having children (male or female) and who agree to use at least one medically approved form of contraception throughout the trial, such as an IUD, oral contraceptives, or condoms.
• Women who are capable of having children must have a negative pregnancy test at screening and must not be breastfeeding.
• People who are willing and able to provide written consent to take part in the study.

Who may not be able to join:

• People whose depression or anxiety scores are above a certain high threshold on the clinical rating scales used at screening.
• People who are currently experiencing significant thoughts of suicide.
• People who have a history of, or a current diagnosis of, certain other mental health conditions such as schizophrenia or epilepsy.
• People who have experienced a serious head injury involving loss of consciousness for more than 10 minutes, have other serious unstable physical health conditions, or have a physical condition that could cause mental health symptoms.
• People where there is a suspicion of an intellectual disability.
• People with a history of alcohol or drug misuse prior to joining the trial.
• People whose brain MRI scan shows signs of physical damage or abnormalities in the brain.
• People whom the trial investigators consider unsuitable for any other reason.
