Who might be able to join this trial:

- Your shingles rash appeared less than 30 days ago
- You are experiencing moderate to severe shingles pain, rated at least 4 out of 10 on a pain scale
- Your liver enzyme levels (measured by a blood test) are within an acceptable range — below twice the normal upper limit
- Your kidneys are functioning at an adequate level, with a filtration rate of 30 mL/min per 1.73 m² or higher (confirm with trial site)

Who may not be able to join:
- Your shingles affects the head, neck, eyes, mouth or other mucous membranes, nerves, or brain, or has spread widely across your body
- You have a known allergy or bad reaction to the medication venlafaxine
- You have a history of major depression that required treatment with antidepressant medication
- You have a history of a serious immune system disease, an organ transplant, or cancer
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have another ongoing pain condition separate from your shingles
